Meta-extremism: Russian bailiffs want to collect 2 billion rubles from Zuckerberg’s company

A Russian court has declared Meta extremist and banned its activities in the country. However, the racists do not stop there: now they want to get two billion rubles.

The main trial ended on March 21. Then the Tver court banned the social networks Facebook and Instagram at the suit of the Prosecutor General’s Office. WhatsApp Messenger was not banned. Now another case has been opened against the company – for the forced collection of a fine. However, there are questions about these intentions.

What is wrong

  • A reciprocal fine for Meta is imposed for the systematic refusal to delete information prohibited by racists.
  • According to the database of enforcement proceedings, the company will be charged 1,990,985,000 rubles.
  • This is the minimum turnover penalty – 5% of annual revenue for 2020.
  • The Federal Bailiffs Service has begun the process of enforcement.
  • However, it is not entirely clear how they are going to do it. Mark Zuckerberg’s company did not comply with the so-called “landing law”, which required large corporations to open offices in Russia and store data on local servers.
  • Accordingly, it has no property in Russia that could be confiscated in favor of the state.
  • There are no clarifications in this regard. This decision is likely to be symbolic, as it is doubtful that Meta will voluntarily pay the fine.
